Warp AI limit: what happens when usage runs out and how to see it coming

Warp caps agent work by balance, not prompt count. UsageAtlas can alert you before that balance runs low.

By ClaudeGPT Si Newsroom, Editorial team3 min read

The Warp AI limit is your included monthly usage plus whatever extra usage you bought; when both are spent, agent runs on Warp-provided models can fail with an insufficient credits error. The fix is to watch the balance before it hits zero, which Warp shows in Settings > Billing and usage and UsageAtlas can alert you about from your desktop.

What the limit is made of

Warp does not cap you by number of prompts. Its credits and billing docs describe a balance that agent work draws down, measured in dollars or credits depending on your plan. Two pools feed it:

  • Included usage that comes with your plan, per seat, renewed monthly with no rollover.
  • Purchased usage you or your team bought, spent only after included usage and valid for 12 months.

What drains the balance varies by task. Model choice, input and output size, caching, tool calls and web search all change the cost, so a balance that lasted most of last month can run out much sooner this month.

What happens when you hit it

Once neither pool has a usable balance, Warp says a run can fail with an insufficient credits error. On the Free plan, conversations cannot run on Warp-provided models at all without included usage, purchased usage or your own inference.

Your terminal keeps working. Regular shell commands and non-AI features do not use agent usage, so only the AI side stops.

Four ways past the Warp AI limit

Option How Trade-off
Wait for the reset Included usage renews monthly Nothing until the date in Billing and usage
Buy more usage One-time purchase, or auto-reload on eligible plans Counts toward a team monthly spend limit
Change plans Move to a plan with a bigger allowance Higher monthly fee
Bring your own key Add an OpenAI, Anthropic or Google key under Settings > Agents > Warp Agent > Manage models Your provider bills you instead

The pricing FAQ notes that requests through your own key do not use Warp-provided inference. Organizations with more than 10 employees need Business or Enterprise to use it.

Get warned before the limit, not at it

Hitting the wall halfway through an agent task is the expensive way to learn your balance. Better to know where you stand before you start.

Inside Warp, Billing and usage shows the allowance, purchased balance and reset date, and /usage in the Warp Agent CLI shows the same account view.

Outside Warp, UsageAtlas does the watching for you. It is a free and open-source desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that tracks usage across AI coding tools. Connect Warp with an API key and its Limits page shows monthly use, the reported reset and add-on balances, keeping personal and workspace pools separate. Set a remaining-capacity threshold and UsageAtlas raises a low-capacity alert while it runs in the tray, for windows where Warp reports a known allowance.

That alert is the main reason to add it. Warp tells you the balance when you go and look; UsageAtlas tells you when it matters, and it does the same for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and the other tools it supports.

One honest limit of its own: UsageAtlas reads current balances, not per-request history, and it cannot add usage or buy top-ups. For a breakdown of which response used what, Warp's turn and conversation views are the right tool.

A simple routine

Check the balance before a long agent task. Keep an alert set at a level that leaves room to finish what you start. Decide ahead of time whether you would rather wait for the reset, buy more, or switch to your own key, so the limit becomes a planned pause rather than a broken run.

FAQ

What happens when I hit the Warp AI limit?

Agent runs on Warp-provided models can fail with an insufficient credits error. You can wait for the monthly reset, buy usage, change plans or use your own API key.

Does bringing my own API key avoid the Warp AI limit?

Requests through your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google key do not use Warp-provided inference. Your provider bills them instead.

Can I get a warning before I reach the limit?

Yes. UsageAtlas can raise a low-capacity alert for Warp windows with a known allowance while it runs in the tray.
