Claude Pro limits explained: two windows, one shared pool
Pro counts usage per five-hour session and per week across chat and Claude Code, with no published message count. Here is what drains it and how to keep watch.

Claude Pro limits come in two layers: a session limit that resets five hours after your first message, and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time each week. As of November 2026 Anthropic publishes no message count for either, only that Pro gives at least five times the Free plan's usage per session and that Max gives five times Pro.
This explainer draws on Anthropic's Pro plan help article, its usage-limits article and the pricing page, read on November 4, 2026.
The two windows
The five-hour session. The clock starts with your first message. Five hours later, the session limit resets in full. If you spend it all sooner, you wait for that reset.
The weekly limit. It covers every model and resets on a day and time assigned to your account. That slot stays put no matter when you start a session or when your subscription began. Settings > Usage shows the next reset.
The two run at the same time. A long, heavy session spends weekly allowance as well, so a few big days can empty the week before it is over.
One pool for chat and code
Claude on the web, the desktop and mobile apps, and Claude Code all draw from the same Pro allowance, including Claude Code running inside VS Code, Cursor or a JetBrains IDE. There is no separate coding bucket on Pro.
What drains Pro limits faster
Anthropic names the factors: long messages and large attachments, long conversations, tools such as Research and web search, the model you choose, and the effort level. Fable models sit outside Pro's allowance altogether. On Pro they run only on usage credits, paid at API rates.
What happens at the limit
| Situation | What you see or can do |
|---|---|
| Getting close | Claude and Claude Code show warning messages |
| Five-hour limit hits mid-task in Claude Code | It may finish the step in progress ("wrapping up"), up to once per week on Pro, while the feature rolls out |
| Limit reached | Wait for the reset, upgrade, or turn on usage credits |
| Usage credits on | Work continues at API rates, billed apart from the $20, up to your monthly cap |
| Upgrade to Max or Ultra | The new plan's limits apply straight away |
Anthropic also says it may cap usage in other ways, such as monthly caps or limits on certain models, to keep capacity fair.
Pro limits next to Max and Ultra
Max costs $100 a month and multiplies both Pro windows by five. Ultra costs $200, gives ten times Pro's weekly usage and has no five-hour limit for verified accounts. Anthropic's Claude Code help page points Pro users who consistently hit limits toward Max. If you hit one only now and then, usage credits are the cheaper fix.
Keeping watch on your Pro limits
The built-in places to look are Settings > Usage on claude.ai, which shows the current session and weekly bars, and /usage inside Claude Code. Both are snapshots. They tell you where you are, not whether this week is unusual.
For a running view, the UsageAtlas desktop app follows Claude's five-hour and weekly windows with their reset times, keeps a history of local Claude Code activity, and sends a desktop alert when a window crosses a threshold you pick. It is free and open source for Windows, macOS and Linux, needs no account for local tracking, and does not read prompts or responses. Its cost figures are estimates.
A few weeks of those alerts tell you whether you had one rough week or have outgrown Pro.
When the limit is not the problem
If one chat simply grows too long, you have reached a length limit, the context window, rather than a usage limit. Anthropic suggests starting a new conversation or working from a project. The pricing table lists the same context window on Pro, Max and Ultra, so upgrading does not raise it.
FAQ
How many messages do you get on Claude Pro?
Anthropic does not give a fixed number. It says Pro offers at least five times the Free plan's usage per five-hour session, and the count varies with message length, attachments, conversation length, model and features.
When does the Claude Pro weekly limit reset?
At a fixed day and time assigned to your account, which does not change with when you start using Claude. Settings > Usage shows the next reset.
Do Claude Code and Claude chat share the Pro limit?
Yes. Claude on the web, desktop and mobile, and Claude Code in the terminal or an IDE all count toward the same limits.
